There Are Many Differences Between Mold And Mildew

Any type of fungus growth isn't a good sign for your home in Billings, MT. However, it's important to know the difference between mildew and mold growth in order to understand how to properly identify and treat the issue as effectively as possible so that you can prevent further problems such as mold damage.
Mold and mildew have a few similarities, making them easy to confuse with one another. Similarities of mold and mildew include:

  • Both a type of fungus
  • Thrive in moist, warm areas
  • Grow on many household surfaces

Differences in Appearance
Mildew growth is typically white, gray or yellow and appears fluffy or powdery. It may grow in a flat pattern. Mold can be green or black in color and appears fuzzy or slimy. It can grow as irregular spots.

Effects of Mold and Mildew
Mildew is less invasive than mold, making the effects less damaging. It may cause harm to food it grows on, but will likely not do damage to surfaces such as tiles or mirrors.
On the other hand, mold damage can be more serious. Mold can damage structures such as homes or cars. It is important to treat it right away in order to prevent long-lasting damage to structures or surfaces.

Treatment of Fungus
The treatment of mold compared to mildew is another difference between the two. Mildew is relatively easy to clean, as it usually requires only a store-bought mildew remover and a scrubbing brush.
For a small area of mold, you may be able to remove it with a good-quality cleaner and hard work. However, a larger area may require a mold remediation company to safely remove and prevent lasting mold damage.
Mold and mildew, although they are similar, are not the same. Knowing the difference between the two can be helpful to understand how to properly identify and effectively treat the problem.
